"What makes a particular city, at a particular time, suddenly become immensely creative, exceptionally innovative?" Peter Hall begins his 1000-page opus magnum "Cities in Civilization" with this intriguing question. From Athens to Hangzhou, from Pataliputra to Silicon Valley, the world has indeed seen a number of these explosions of urban creativity.

The question of how to emulate such powerful dynamics of innovation has unremittingly accompanied academics of the modern age for 100 years - such as Alfred Marshall's famous "Cluster of Industrial Districts" (1890s), the Swedish theories of the "Creative City" (1950s), The French models of "Milieux Innovators" (GREMI,1990s) - all the way to Richard Florida's international bestseller "Rise of the Creative Class" (2004).

Despite the vast amount of research made on the role of space and social networks in creating the conditions for technological, social, and cultural innovation, it looks like it has not trickled down to the planning and policy level. At this event, we will first present the key ideas of socio-spatial prerequisites for innovation, and then open up a discussion on how innovation can look like in India.
